چکیده
Previous chapters have introduced all the ingredients you need to define a model — mathematical functions to describe the deterministic patterns and probability distributions to describe the stochastic patterns — and shown how to use these ingredients to simulate simple ecological systems. However, you need to learn not only how to construct models but also how to estimate parameters from data, and how to test models against each other. You may be wondering by now how one actually does this. In general, to estimate the parameters of a model we have to find the parameters that make that model fit the data best. To compare among models we have to figure out which one fits the data best, and decide if one or more models fit sufficiently much better than the rest that we can declare them the winners. Our goodness-of-fit metrics will be based on the likelihood, the probability of seeing the data we actually collected given a particular model — which in this case will mean both the general form of the model and the specific parameter values.

A New Approximation for the Null Distribution of the Likelihood Ratio Test Statistics for k Outliers in a Normal Sample
Usually when performing a statistical test or estimation procedure, we assume the data are all observations of i.i.d. random variables, often from a normal distribution. Sometimes, however, we notice in a sample one or more observations that stand out from the crowd. These observation(s) are commonly called outlier(s). Outlier tests are more formal procedures which have been developed for detec...
متن کاملShrinkage Curve: Experimental Study and Modelling
In order to study the shrinkage process of clayey soil, we perform a modified laboratory test allowing to measure simultaneously and continuously the vertical displacement and the weight of natural state specimen. The experiment was conducted on undisturbed clayey specimen. Using the experimental results, and on the basis of the existing relation between the soil water content and its structura...
متن کاملThermal Analysis of Laser Hardening for Different Moving Patterns
Transient thermal field in laser surface hardening treatment of medium carbon steel was analyzed by employing both three-dimensional analytical model and finite element model. In finite element model the laser beam was considered as a moving plane heat flux to establish the temperature rise distribution in the work-piece, while in analytical model laser beam was considered as an internal heat s...
متن کاملModular approach for an ASIC integration of electrical drive controls
VLSI circuits design allows today to consider new modes of implementation for electrical controls. However, design techniques require an adaptation effort that few designers, too accustomed to the software approach, provide. The authors of this article propose to develop a methodology to guide the electrical designers towards optimal performances of control algorithms implementation. Thus, they...

Background and objectives: There is growing interest in assessing gene-environment interaction in the course of case-control studies. Difficulties related to the sampling of controls have led to the development of a range of non-traditional methods that do not require controls for estimating gene-environment interaction. One of these new modalities is the case-only approach, in which the asse...

Background and objective: Disease or mortality mapping are statistical methods aimed at providing precise estimates of rates across geographical maps. The aim of this research is to improve the precision of relative risk (RR) estimates of infant mortality (IM) for different rural areas, using empirical and full Bayesian methods. Methods: Infant mortality data were extracted from the vital ...
